RESTAURANT // BLEND BERLIN KITCHEN AND BAR

Berlin is known for its highly diverse population - primarily the Turkish, Eastern European and Eastern- Mediterranean nationalities are broadly represented. This is also reflected in Berlin’s culinary landscape with its many restaurants, street food stands and other food shops of this kind. The food style at BLEND is inspired by this and has many influences of the German, Turkish, Eastern-Mediterranean and Eastern -European cuisines.

The food concept at BLEND aims to embrace the "Berliner food culture" and is best described as a fun dining kitchen inspired by the (ethnic) cuisines and ingredients of Berlin. Dishes are served in a fun way and creatively with a certain twist given their use of ingredients, preparation method or way of serving. As much as possible, dishes are regionally sourced and in season.

ICE CREAM CAFÉ // PAUL MÖHRING

Homemade soft serve ice cream - with a pinch of madness. You can build your own creation with a wide variety of toppings such as olive oil & sea salt or choose from the range of specials they offer such as "The Butcher": Creamy vanilla ice cream, maple glazed bacon, whiskey sauce. There are also a couple of more traditional options if you prefer more traditional flavor combinations.

Paul Möhring also offers great coffee, perfectly poured, with beans from Bonanza Coffee.

During winter Paul Möhring also serves homemade cakes and brioches which you can garnish with their toppings. They also offer hot apple strudel or nice little chocolate lava cakes. When it's freezing cold outside you may also want to warm yourself with hot buttered rum, Glühwein or cardamom hot chocolate.

COFFEE SHOP // %ARABICA

%Arabica Coffee is one of the newest coffee spots in Berlin.  You can find this hidden gem hiding in a backyard in Kreuzberg.  The first thing you notice is the minimalist interior, a mix of Japanese simplicity and that follows as well the iconic Braun designer, Dieter Ram. Japan meets Germany.

In the middle of the store, it is a big open kitchen surrounded by glass, like an aquarium. And that kitchen is run by Tyler. Tylers has worked in some awesome places I had the honor to visit, like Noma, Momofuku Milk Bar and Torissi  (that is closed now but it is a spot everyone still talks about).

In addition to that resume, he makes all handmade fresh pasta and uses all local ingredients who he visits regularly for sourcing. His mindset is sustainable and all those dishes he prepares are carefully sourced and prepared simply to bring the power of ingredients out on to our pallets.

BREWERY // BRLO

BRLO BRWHOUSE is a Brewery, Restaurant, Bar, Beer garden, and above all the home of BRLO and the Berlin craft beer movement. They have such an affinity with this city that their roots are apparent in their very name. BRLO is the old Slavic origin of the name Berlin (Hard to pronounce until you’ve had a few).

With the BRLO BRWHOUSE they created a Craft beer playground, in the heart of Berlin. Here they have not only realized their vision to provide contemporary brewhouse gastronomy, but also a venue which caters to beer culture, the culinary arts, crazy ideas, and one of a kind individuals.

A unique concept deserves a unique venue. It is not only their offering which is one of a kind but also the venue in which it all takes place. The complete structure is composed of 38 up-cycled shipping containers. The modular nature of the structure means it can be quickly disassembled and reconstructed anywhere in the world. As they only have this site for a few short years they will once again be in search of a new home for their BRWHOUSE. This one of a kind concept and structure is the brainchild of world-renowned architects GRAFT.

VEGAN CAFÉ // ATAYA CAFFEE

Ataya is probably the best hidden vegan pearl in Prenzlauer Berg. It lays in the middle of a very residential neighborhood and probably if you have been there it's because someone told you about it or you googled for the best vegan in town.

What is makes this place so special is the kind of cuisine they serve. The owners come from Senegal and Sardinia, making every plate a fusion dream. Their ingredients are all organic, vegan and they don't use plastic at all. Even they don't use paper cups for coffee-to-go.

Ataya in Africa is a place where the community gathers to talk, eat and drink tea. From men to women and even children. They drink tea together and solve problems while grabbing a bite as well. And you can feel this when you go inside their cozy café.

19 grams and their Coffee Advent Calendar

Picture
Tres Cabezas Coffee was first Introduced to me by my super bae Ingri (she is not only gorgeous but second place in the World Aeropress Championship and in the Norwegian Brewers Cup).  I remember the coffee from Tres Cabezas a lot, not only for its unusual name but the taste was awesome!

Last Summer, I was invited to the opening party of their new Coffee Roastery and third "19 grams" café in Berlin. I was electrified about having a place close by where I can drink some of their amazing roasts.
Picture
Tres Cabezas is being re-branded slowly to 19 grams. But funny-wise, outside of the café you cant see neither "19 grams" nor "Tres Cabezas" but the sign says "BLOODY GOOD COFFEE"  And they are so right.

This place is gorgeous. The industrial feeling and open spaces make me feel comfortable right away. There aren't many walls around, but glass walls and doors. You can actually see the whole store: from the offices to the roastery and even the kitchen.
Picture
Picture
Picture
You can not only eat here, but you can buy their coffee, coffee equipment, their advent calendar and more. They even have a private area if you need to work in silence.
Picture

Coffee & Cascara Anyone?
Picture
But why do I write about this place just now? Well, HO HO HOLY SHIT, It is almost Christmas! So it is time for me to get an Advent Calendar for me and one for Pepa. I don't eat chocolate in the morning, but I crave coffee, good coffee. So I was thrilled to hear 19 grams has a Coffee Advent Calendar: A selection of 24 of the world's best Single Origin Coffees (whole beans or ground)
Picture
The design idea is fantastic as they deliver the coffee in resealable and reusable cans. So you can re-use them as a gift box, for storage or even for some DIY projects. And by re-closability of the cans, you can still enjoy the coffees after Christmas because the cans keep the aroma of the individual beans longer. And that's a good thing because every single bean is a little gem.

Exclusive to the calendar, there is a coffee advent calendar website, where you will find out everyday information, videos, recipes and exciting stories about the coffee, the farms, the roasting process, and their roasting. So you become the absolute coffee pro!

Everything is made by hand as you see. even the labeling. So they have a limited amount of them.
Picture
While I was waiting for my food I ordered some coffee, the filter brew of Columbian Beans and a double espresso to keep me awake. Both perfect!
Picture

Picture
As a flexitarian, I enjoy some meat once in a while. OK! I love meat. So as the boy wasn't with me this time, I ordered their signature dish: BLOODY GOOD BREAKFAST: Spanish Chorizo, maple bacon, roasted tomato, mushroom chutney, blood pudding, and two poached eggs. They do have Vegan and Vegetarian options. I took the meat-full gluten-free option. I was in meat heaven! delicious and those poached eggs were made just like I like them: runny and with a hint of vinegar.

Sadly, I am gone to Portugal from the 7th, So I have two choices: Or I'll get myself an Aeropress and take some beans with me, or I'll start today opening them... what would you do?

Quince Crumble Cheesecake

Picture
Quince, quince & more quince. Why I have never eaten this fruit? In Peru, we use it as an "Energy Cleaner". We put it somewhere in the room and it turns black when it converts bad energy into good energy. Either way, enough with my Peruvian Juju.

After watching the last Berchtesgadener Milch Video, I decided to make a cake myself using some of their products: Organic butter and Quark (curd). The first thing that got in my head was german cheesecake or crumble pie... so why not mix them both?
Picture
Ingredients:

For the quince compote:
1 kg of quince
50g sugar
2 cinnamon stick
5 tbsp water

For the filling:
500g Bio-Quark from Berchtesgadener Milch
2 eggs
1 package Vanilla Pudding powder
50g sugar

For the dough:
1 pack Butter of Berchtesgadener Milch
250 g Buckwheat flour
100g ground almonds (if possible roasted)
150g brown sugar
Picture
Let´s get Quinced! Wash the quince, cut it roughly. Don't worry about the size of the dices, you can re-cut them after cooked and when they are less hard. Put them in a saucepan with the water, sugar and the cinnamon sticks and cook them for about 25 minutes, let them cool.
Picture
Put all the ingredients together for the dough and shape it into a ball. Wrap it in cling film and refrigerate for one hour.
Picture
Picture
Separate the eggs. Beat the egg whites stiff. Stir the yolks with the sugar until creamy. Add Quark and pudding powder and mix everything together. Incorporate the egg whites. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Grease the springform.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Briefly knead 2/3 of the dough press it into the springform pulling up the edge. Spread the quince on top and then add the quark mixture and sprinkle with the rest of the shortcrust pastry as a sprinkle. Then bake the cake for about 55 minutes.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Did I mention this cake is Gluten-Free??? Sprinkle powder sugar and eat it while it is warm. I had some vanilla ice cream with it and I really loved it!
Here is the video I was talking about. I hope you try this at home and don't forget to tell me how was it!

Pumpkin Chickpea Curry

11/14/2018

Picture
After visiting Bombay Café Bunty's, I couldn't get Indian food out of my head... And as I needed to spoil a big fan of Indian food, I decided to make my very very first curry. Ehmm ok, Asif (from L.A. Poke) told me yesterday that there is no "Curry" in India as we know it in Europe. Let's say I made an Indian Pumpkin and Chickpea Stew :)

It had to be vegetarian and I always find it much difficult to create a recipe if there is no meat or animal broth in it.  But to be honest, this was absolutely delicious. Not only because I made it but I still get love declarations directed to the curry instead of me. So let's start the curry-ing around:
Picture
Ingredients: (4 people):

1 red onion in halves
2 garlic cloves
Thumb size ginger peeled
3 tbsp neutral oil
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp coriander (ground)
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp cumin (ground)
400 gr Butternut squash, peeled
1 can of chickpeas (drained) 400 gr
1 can coconut cream or milk
1 cup veggie broth
2 full hands of spinach or baby spinach
Salt
Lime
Fresh Parsley
Picture
Let's get started! the main thing to do is make the curry paste. For that, you put the onion, garlic, and ginger into your food processor or blender and add oil to it. Blend it to a paste.

In a dutch oven or cast iron pan, fry the paste for a few minutes. (I diced my pumpkin at that time) add a pinch of salt to it.
Picture
Once your onion paste is starting to look light purple and a bit transparent, add all the spices and fry for another minute. Doesn't it look now like those store bought curry pastes?
Picture
Picture
Add the squash and chickpeas and mix with the spices, then add the coconut milk and broth. Bring to simmer and cook for 30 minutes until the squash softens and the sauce thickens,
Picture
Now it's time to add the spinach. Don't worry if it looks like loads of leaves! Just do it! Stir it all until the spinach is droopy!

Now serve with some rice and squeeze some drops of lime to it and sprinkle with some parsley and toasted shaved almonds... ENJOY and let me know if you liked the "Curry".

19 Grams -Tres Cabezas

As I explained on my last post about 19grams, Tres Cabezas is being re-branded slowly to 19 grams. But funny-wise, outside of the café you cant see neither "19 grams" nor "Tres Cabezas" but the sign says "BLOODY GOOD COFFEE"  And they are so right.

They have Three 19grams in Berlin so far: Chausseestrasse, Schlessische Strasse and Alex and one Tres Cabezas roastery in Friedrichshain. I have only been in the Alex location and that place is gorgeous. The industrial feeling and open spaces makes you feel comfortable right away.

They serve delicious brunch and breakfast, with vegan, gluten free options as well. I am in love with the meat with meat and the side of meat dish called: BLOODY GOOD BREAKFAST

In Hawaiian culture, "Mana" is considered an all-pervading force. A man with a special Mana, it is said, is characterized by great creativity, health and strength. So, if you're looking for the secret of Hawaiian joie de vivre and inner balance, it's best to start with your own mana.

However, Sons of Mana dont make any secret out of their poke bowls. That's why they always prepare your bowl freshly before your eyes - and that's faster than you think. Dae Mon

Dae Mon its an open-minded cuisine. Since October 2014, between the Monbijoupark and the Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station, there is a modern restaurant with an open kitchen - the Dae Mon. It started as a contemporary Korean cuisine, but since 2 years with a different concept: open-minded cuisine is offered here, the equally interesting and convincing combination of European cuisine with Japanese and Korean influences. Chef Raphael presents a new menu four times a year, always rising to new culinary heights.

And 2 years ago I visited their awesome restaurant and was fascinated by their food, so this was a "must-have" for the calendar. Here is my blogpost about Dae Mon

PFEFFI Berlin

A small team of  Pfeffi-Lovers founded a new company in Berlin in 2017. What connects them was their passion for handmade things and extraordinary ideas. Inspired by the growing interest in 'handcrafted' spirits, they came up with the idea of accompanying one of the most popular German spirits - the peppermint - into a new age and giving it a more refined shine and elegance.

Bombay Cafe Buntys - Best Indian in Berlin

11/13/2018

Picture
Two weeks ago I decided to try the new Indian restaurant in Charlottenburg: Bombay Café Bunty's. I thought I should tell you guys how it was. Bunty (bourgeois Suhasish Chakraborty), the super cool owner, opened the doors of his modern taste of India restaurant in October. Very close to Savignyplatz, the heart of culinary Charlottenburg.

I really like Indian food and I never cook it at home as it takes real skills. I like to go to restaurants for this kind of food but it has been a bit underwhelming to try over and over Indian restaurants that aren't really super good. But then I got in Bombay Cafe Bunty's and it was Love at first sight & bite.
Picture
The first you notice is the beautiful interior design. It doesn't look like every Indian restaurant in Berlin. It looks modern, a raw brick wall on one side and industrial lamps. Close to the toilets a super cool neon sign that says: "BE NICE OR FUCKING LEAVE" shows you that Bombay Café Bunty's (BCB) isn't just another typical a European/Indian place.

Bunty told us that in Bombay, where he comes from, the cafés actually look like this. Surprising, right?. You can see hanging on the walls beautiful artwork and amazing pictures by a photographer that spent many years in Bombay and in India in general.
Picture
So we started ordering food. Bae is vegetarian so he ordered the Tandoori Mango Paneer Tikka that is a homemade cottage cheese marinated with mango juice, yoghurt, and other herbs and I had to steal a bit of it because it looked delicious, and it was outstanding.

The next one he got was the Samosas.. sadly I can't eat gluten so I couldn't try these ones (look to the main picture) They were baked Indian dumplings filled with mashed potato and peas covered with mint-tamarind chutney.  WHY??? Why I can't eat gluten... Frank looked in cloud seven while eating them and he said they were the best Samosas he had in a very long time.
Picture
As a Flexetarian, I ordered the meat: Lamb Seekh Kebab. A Lamb skewer served with Zaziki and regularly with Lavash Bread. The lamb was so good! it was so tender and juicy and at the same time crispy outside. The spices were very good and you could totally taste the difference between BCB and other Indian restaurants in Berlin.
Picture
While I was enjoying my delicious white wine, the main dishes arrived. Starting with mine:  Their Coconut-Lime-Shrimps curry. This is a west-Coast Indian dish made with coconuts and lemongrass.

And I am not a person that would keep saying: "OH MY GOD! This is so good!" but I just couldn't stop myself from saying this the whole time. It was actually hard to keep a conversation while eating as it was so creamy and spicy and good. It was the kind of spicy that doesn't numb your tongue but let you taste all the diverse ingredients and spices... BRAVO!
Picture
The Vegetarian dish arrived:  Aloo Mutter Curry. Franks go-to dish is this one. This is a potato and peas curry with caramelized onions. He said it was his favorite Aloo Mutter Curry in Berlin. We both really loved the food.

The dishes were quite big so we didn't order any desserts (and there was none gluten-free) but I doubt I could have been able to eat any other pea that night.
Picture
As I wrote on the title: This is in my honest opinion the best Indian Restaurant in Berlin. And I wasn't paid to say this or blog about it. And as I am already sending my friends there when they ask me about new places, I thought I would share them with you.

Get your bum all the way to Charlottenburg, cause it is super worth it! And let me know how did you like it!

RESTAURANT // L.A. POKE

Did you know that Poke has its origins in Hawaii? The term simply means "cut into pieces" and was created as a combination of Japanese and West Coast cuisine fusion.

L.A. Poke mixes the tradition of the Islanders with a soft breeze of California and brings it to Berlin. It is hard not to fall in love with the ease, curiosity, and attitude of the Californians. And at the same time in the traditional, simple and fresh cuisine of the Hawaiians. L.A. Poke combines the best of both worlds: with regional and high-quality ingredients, home-made marinades, changing specials, vegan and gluten-free-friendly.

Californian bowls that are as easy, healthy and exceptional as otherwise only the fabulous life in L.A.

And if you wish to have your lunch accompanied by something stronger, there is prosecco and a small selection of wines.
Big, bright, with calm music, free WiFi and sockets, it makes for a perfect space to work, read or study during the week.

Last month I was invited to fly to Bordeaux for a weekend to eat delicious food and drink all those amazing wines from the Bordeaux region. The dream trip. I love food and wine... and escaping to a warm place was just the best thing to do in September.

It all started with a group of influencers, a VW vintage Bully and a super cute small villa in Arcachon.  I was the designated driver, and my passengers were @Frances, @oh_wunderbar, @marrykotter, and my bestie: @travelettes's Katja. We used the hashtag #ohlalabordeaux during the trip, so our Instagram followers would see everything we were doing.

We arrived at the house and were greeted with Château Favory bubbles and finger food that we enjoyed on the porch talking about our itinerary. The first stop was the famous restaurant La Co(o)rniche that stands high up a mountain and lets you see the beautiful sunset while dining on their terrace.

We talked a lot about wines and women in the wine world. While I was enjoying the marvelous tuna tataki, I got to learn so many things about Bordeaux Wines.  They help and support vineyards owned by women as they bring some new things to the table. This made me extremely happy as  Calon Segur makes one of my favorite wines. Calon Segur is from Bordeaux and owned by a woman. We were sipping Le G from Château Guiraud. when my big mouth-watering Entrêcote came to the table.

A beautiful evening in a wonderful location, enjoying delicious food and wine. We went back home and slept some, as the next day was going to be packed, starting with a trip to the Atlantic Ocean.

This wooden beauty was waiting for us in Cap Ferret. The boat came with a skipper, So I could enjoy all the wine ;) I needed some wine as I had huge parking problem as I didn't notice the Bully was over 2 meters. Thank god for all the "patient" Frenchmen that allowed me to drive backwards from a garage house on a one-way street... eiiiither waaay, back to the trip!

We did a tour, starting with some food at Le Monte à Bord where we had fresh and awesome seafood with pate and bread. Yes! is the only things they served. We washed it down with some cold and refreshing Bordeaux White Wines. This charming restaurant is directly on the beach and owned by 2 generations of super handsome men. Did I  mention the Oysters??? I think I almost ate them all! (Sorry Girls)

After food and drinks, we jumped back to our little boat and headed to see the Europes biggest dune: Dune du Pilat. And we did some sunbathing and had some nice rosé wines while the girls had some Canelés.. sadly still no Gluten Free version of those.

After all that fun, and some shopping in Arcachon, we went home got a shower an drove to our next dinner. It was again on the beach, Pereire. But actually, we were going to dine with our feet on the sand! We arrived just on time to see the sunset while having some delicious white and rosés at Club Plage Pereire.

Dining with our toes in the sand.
It got pretty fast very dark, So excuse me for not making any more pictures... And after all, enjoying the breeze while having wine and steak tartare and talking with the girls was a bit funnier than trying to get a picture of the plates.

Dark but delicious dinner

My favorite white of the evening.
After the dinner and spending all day on the sea, we drove straight back home and couldn't wait until next day... something about a tree, picnic, and wine...
Picture
We arrived at Château de Cerons after a very "curvy" way... French people like those roundabouts... but when you are driving a vintage car, it's workout.

What a beautiful place! Château de Cérons is a magnificent 17th-century manor house surrounded by vines, as well as the old barrel cellar and new winemaking facility. During the tour, I learned that they are testing on something I saw in a visit to Bornholm. As Bornholms-ismejeri is using algae to substitute egg, Château de Cerons is trying to replace eggs for algae during the clarification process and removing tannins. Isn't that incredible?

When the sun cleared out, we had a small "picnic" on their gardens. We ate foie gras, duck pâté, black olive “tapenade” and cheese (loads of amazing cheese) and of course got to taste 3 of their best wines as well.

Funny fact, the owners of the vineyard, were friend of my neighbors in Oslo... it seem all those Pascal I met in Oslo knew this great hosts!

But even good things have to come to an end, we jumped on the Bully (called Jean Pierre) and drove to the next exciting experience: Wine tasting on a tree!
Picture
Picture
In Château Rayne Vigneau, a first-class vineyard in Sauternes, you can taste wine in an unexpected and at the same time adventurous way in a 200 years old and 4 floors high cedar tree. But do not worry, you do not have to single-handedly climb the trunk. At least that is what we heard... But our image of being lifted up to a tree to taste some wine was sooooo far away from reality.
Picture
You actually have to climb all the way up.  Sadly we were not really dressed for the occasion: sandals and dresses instead of sneakers and jeans. We all tried. We lost 4 women on our journey and I was the only one that actually made it to the top.
Picture
For sure, it is a little workout for the limbs, but the slight tremor in the legs is blown away, with the first sip of wine. Once I got to the treetop, a fine Sauternes, the famous sweet wine from Bordeaux, was waiting for me. Sorry, I lost the girls, but hey! I got to enjoy a private testing with Vincent while looking at the Château and the unique view of the surrounding vineyards.  I was the 301st person to Climb Arséne, the tree.

Picture
We went for a shower and I needed some band aids for all the climbing blisters. We jumped back in Jean Pierre and drove all the way to Château Bessan where you can find La Cabane dans les Vignes. A beautiful location for our last night. It is a small wooden cottage in the middle of the vineyard.
Picture
We arrived just in time to see our third and last sunset in Bordeaux. We enjoyed the sun while drinking diverse wines and bubbles. We had some finger food until it was dark.

They prepared a candlelight dinner for us and we ended up talking for hours about wine and Bordeaux. Did I mention they showed us the coolest video ever??? Mathieu actually took his friends and they all got to surf the river while drinking their new wine called Mascaret (The Wave) Watch the video here.

Thanks, Bordeaux Weine for such an incredible weekend, full of new experiences. Made some new friends, drunk a lot of delicious wine, got to eat a lot of amazing food, drove a vintage VW Bully... climbed a tree, made an awesome "flying" picture... What a great experience! Thanks again!
