During Food Zürich, I had an evening free of events. And my first choice was Ecco. I was not sure I could get a reservation with such short notice, but I was really lucky and they had a table waiting for me.
Almost like the song: "One Food Blogger went eating one day, over the hill and far away." I was using the awesome Zürich Card, so I decided to go by streetcar. Once I arrived at the stop (Thank Google Maps!) I started the walk. Ecco is at the Hotel Atlantis by Giardino, Really up the hill, with a beautiful view to the city. It was quite a walk, but I love walking, even better in such green small paths.
I have been to many Michelin-starred restaurants, But I noticed they were all in the nordics. 3 starMaaemo, Ylajali and Kontrast in Oslo, Noma in Copenhagen (sadly no blogpost), Ask and Chef and Sommelier in Helsinki, Kadeau in Bornholm in between others, but somehow I totally missed German Michelin-starred restaurants, So I decided to start with VAU here in Berlin.
This small pink fassade camouflages in a narrow street next to Gendarmenmarkt and Berlin's Concert Hall, and entering through a courtyard, you can find Vau. A beautiful place with place for about 60 people. Nicely adorned with cooper plates and wooden accessories. The light is dim and gives the place a golden look.
I am super late on my Helsinki posts, but better late than never! As you guys have already read, I went on a Birthday/Couple Trip to Helsinki last summer. I was very lucky to be able to eat at the Micheln Star Restaurant Ravintola Ask, found the secret Helsinki Bar (sorry no cameras allowed) and even got to find the Best Coffee Spots in Helsinki.
In June I went to Helsinki because since I was 5 years old, I wanted to see Finland. I remember my aunt's boyfriend, Jouko, would fly to Peru to visit her and he would tell me many stories about that far far away country.
On my birthday, I decided I needed to go somewhere I haven't been before. So the decision was made! I had to fly to Helsinki.
One of the most recommended places to go in Helsinki is Restaurant Ask. It is a small place located in the nice area of Kronohagen/Kruununhakawith and it has 26 seats. I was surprised to see how small it was, though it was beautifully decorated in a very minimalistic scandinavian style
After three days on Bornholm we were already sold. This really felt like a dream. The passion and dedication for food that we saw, reflected in organic farming, animal welfare, sustainability and great utilization of local produce had us convinced. Not to mention the stunning nature with beaches in the south, mighty cliffs in the north, and endless fields of rapeseed flowers and forest floor covered in ramsons wherever you wander. However, the true diamond of this island had yet to be explored.Restaurant Kadeau was booked for our Friday evening.
Ylajali is closing. This is their final chapter. When the news broke that Even Ramsvik would conclude the adventure of his one Michelin star restaurant by the end of this year, we knew it was time to finally pay him a visit. Due to the same reason as we wrote in our Maaemo feature, we had not been here before. In hindsight, a big mistake. Ylajali turned out to be a remarkable dining experience.
A Michelin starred restaurant is usually not where we dine on a regular Thursday after work. This kind of luxury is reserved for vacations. However, we realized that by following this logic we would never get to test the best restaurants in our own hometown. Thus, when our good friend André Blomberg-Nygård asked if we wanted to join for a small snack at his favorite neighborhood shack, Maaemo, we accepted his invitation.
«Would you like to come with us to Bornholm?» they asked us from Visit Denmark. Yes, please, sign us up! To get to experience this culinary gem of an island in Denmark has been a dream for a long while. For some reason we have postponed it, probably since it has been easier to just visit Copenhagen or other big cities. You should not postpone it! If you like the pleasures of good food, produced organically by passionate farmers, with ingredients foraged and prepared by dedicated chefs and served on handcrafted ceramics, Bornholm is your dream destination.
Chef Wassim Hallal of Restaurant Frederikshøj is hoping for a Michelin star or two this Thursday, when Guide Michelin Nordic Cities 2015 is launched. This is the first opportunity for restaurants outside the major cities in the Nordic to be featured in the famous red guide. The less controversial White Guide in Sweden has done this for a few years already, and included Denmark and Norway in their latest edition last year. However, the Michelin Guide does have a higher status and the expectation level is greater. Two Foodies Eating will be in Stockholm to cover the Michelin event the 26th of February!
